Karate is derived from the Japanese word 'kara' meaning empty and 'te' meaning hands. As most people might think, Karate is not about attack. It is even not about defense. Attack and defense are the minor sub parts of karate. It is essentially an art which cultivates courage and develops physical and mental health through practice. In addition, karate training emables the individual to defend himself against physical aggression without reliance upon weapons. It is also possible, however, to use certain tools or insturments in one's defence depending on the circumstances.
